If the value of the assets of the banks moves even a little bit, the equity of the banking system would go to zero. In order to adequately recapitalize a banking system that size, it would take around 30-40% of GDP(assuming a 10% capital/assets ratio). Or you could just let a bunch of assets totaling over 3 times GDP just liquidate all at once?
